In the world of re-enactment, we used to call people who were obsessed with authenticity “rivet-counters”.

To my mind, a spiritual experience or other interaction with the numinous is good as long as it expands your consciousness (and by extension, the collective store of spirituality) and doesn’t involve a deity telling you to harm others.

I am completely mystified by the kind of people who refuse to countenance any spiritual idea that isn’t old. All of the “old” ideas were new once…
